Cell phone History Timeline

Before I give you a cell phone history timeline, let me tell you what comedienne Lily Tomlin has to say about language…trust me it is relevant…and funny - “I personally think we developed language because of our deep inner need to complain!” Has anyone ever noticed that is mostly what we do on our cellphones? Boss complains about southward sales, mom complains about messy room, friend cribs about physics teacher and the wife just complains! Whatever the reason for talking to someone, cellphones have become an integral part of our lives now. But this modern day phenomenon has been a long time in the making.

The cell phone history timeline began in 1843 with Michael Faraday – a consummate analytical chemist, whose discoveries prepared the ground for cellular phone technology. In 1865, Dr. Mahlon Lewis, a Virginia dentist, probably became the first person to communicate through wireless via space, all thanks to Faraday’s experiments on whether space could conduct electricity. Several inventors and wireless technology enthusiasts later in 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper invented the first portable phone and later that year the first prototype of the cellular phone was displayed to the public.

But it took another four years for cellphones to go public when in 1977 public cellphone testing began. The year 1988 saw the cellphone industry start employing more advanced technology and The Cellular Technology Industry Association was set up. By the onset of the 1990s, cellphone usage had started increasing by leaps and bounds with several telecommunication companies jumping on to the bandwagon. In about three decades cellphone users hit the $60 million mark and are growing as we speak.

Today the market for cellphones stands at more than $30 billion and not having a cellphone is something we cannot comprehend. After all, how does one complain without a cellphone?
